Abstract

MESTRIES, Francis. Migrantes binacionales y participación política local: El Rey del Tomate en Jerez, Zacatecas. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2016, n.69, pp.34-64. ISSN 2007-2392.

This article questions the concept of"transnationalism" presenting the case of successful binational migrant Andrés Bermúdez. At the dawn of the legislative amendments on dual nationality and voting of Mexicans abroad, Bermúdez rose to fame to compete for the office of mayor of Jerez, his hometown, sweeping the enthusiasm of the people, especially farmers, with an anti-corruption, anti-traditional elite and democratic renewal speech. We question the simultaneity of the transnational experience of permanent migrants, highlighting the rift between spatial and temporal experiences with respect to hometown, and divergent cultural changes experienced by expatriates and their homeland.

Keywords : dual nationality; migration; Zacatecas; Bermúdez; transnationalism.
