Abstract
CASTANEDA GARCIA, Rafael. Familia y mestizaje en dos cofradías de descendientes de africanos en Nueva España (San Miguel el Grande, siglo XVIII). Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2016, n.69, pp.96-120. ISSN 2007-2392.
This article discusses the ways in which devotees were incorporated into two brotherhoods with strong ethnic character, founded by mulattos and blacks in San Miguel el Grande, located in the Bajio region of New Spain. We start off with the notion that during the eighteenth century, the nature of these corporations was racially and ethnically mixed; therefore, family and emotional ties were motivations for these pious communities to add new members. Ultimately, ethnicity and devotion were not the only reasons to attract devotees.
