Abstract

MUMARY FARTO, Pablo Alberto. A special container for a peculiar drink. Analysis of the Mayan k955 pot. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2019, n.75, pp.188-210. ISSN 2007-2392.

Summary: Dynastic pots or receptacles form part of a ceramic material that stands out for the decoration and distinctive details on its surfaces. Pots of the Kaan dynasty stand out because their narrative hieroglyphics depict lists of governors whose origins seem to have been lost in the mists of time; however, there are exceptions and in some cases, the theme of the artifact is complemented with references about the content, use and the owners in question. Through comprehensive epigraphic and iconographic analyses, this paper discusses the case of the K955 pot, which was used to hold an intoxicating beverage consumed in different types of rituals. The results of these analyses allow us to infer dif ferent social-political contexts in which the use of the artifact took on a greater relevance.

Keywords : Dynastic pots or receptacles; Kaan; K955; pulque; ceramic; epigraphy.
