Abstract
RODRIGUEZ MOYA, Inmaculada. Projects for the commemorative column of Independence in México City (1843-1854). Secuencia [online]. 2008, n.70, pp.45-65. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i70.1030.
This article analyzes the projects submitted to competitions for building a commemorative monument to Mexican Independence in México City. In 1843, Antonio López de Santa Anna organized a competition for a monument that would perpetúate the memory of Independence. Various projects were submitted that were subsequently evaluated by the professors of what was then known as the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. Only three of these projects were considered by the professors, who issued their verdict. This study will analyze the iconographic content of certain projects submitted in this and subsequent competitions: the pantheon of heroes proposed in them, the meaning of symbolic elements and their sculptural composition since they all exercised an enormous influence over the construction of the definitive commemorative monument of Independence raised in Paseo de la Reforma.
