Abstract
ZAMUDIO SANCHEZ, Francisco José; LOPEZ BECERRIL, lraís Damaris and ROMO LOZANO, José Luis. Rurality in the Central-East Region of Mexico. Secuencia [online]. 2009, n.75, pp.97-116. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i75.1090.
Rural areas have once again become a topic of discussion in the academic and political sphere, due to the problems it is experiencing and the functions it performs. Correctly delimiting them is essential to the effectiveness of policies; several criteria have been used for them although they do not usually include several crucial characteristics for defining what is rural. This paper provides a brief description of a proposed index of rurality. The index is then used to describe the Central-East region, which is economically and socially important. This is the most heterogeneous region, since it comprises virtually the entire range of rurality in the country despite the proximity and concentration of the states comprising it. It is a region that shows the di-versity of rural areas that can exist, as well as proving that certain states are socially but not economically rural or vice versa.
Keywords : Rurality; human development; marginalization; regions of Mexico; Central-East region.
