Abstract

REMEDI, Fernando J.. "This General Breakdown of Hired Help". Female Domestic Workers in Argentinean Modernization. Córdoba, 1869-1906. Secuencia [online]. 2012, n.84, pp.43-69. ISSN 2395-8464.

This paper examines domestic service in the city of Córdoba, a city in Argentina, between the late 19th and early 20th century within the framework of major processes as a sustained economic expansion, swift urbanization and widespread modernization. The study combines a macroanalytical approach (through population censuses) with a microanalytical approach, focusing on the analysis of the experience of female domestic workers (using police and judicial sources). It holds that the period saw the growing commercialization of domestic service, and a shift from relations marked by paternalism to other more contractual ones, based on negotiation.

Keywords : Domestic service; female workers; the poor; modernization; labor market.
