The objective of this study is to describe the changes of female headship in Cali, Colombia and of the characteristics of female heads of household among different socio-racial groups at the end of the colonial era. For this purpose, we used population registers of 1797 and 1807. The results revealed that female headship was predominant among populations of African origin and very high among whites and those of noble origin. Between 1797 and 1807, female headship increased and its growth varied by socio racial group.

Keywords : female headship; socio-racial conditions; gender; family; historical demographics; viceroyalty of Nueva Granada.
