Abstract

RABELO, Elson de Assis. The Landscapes of the São Francisco River in Contemporary Brazilian Issues. Secuencia [online]. 2017, n.98, pp.204-227. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i98.1362.

This paper proposes an analysis of certain social issues related to the construction of the landscapes of the São Francisco River in contemporary Brazil, and their fields of interests and conflicts, such as: the growth of irrigated agriculture, the planned changes to the direction of the water flow, environmental pollution and modifications in the practices and lifestyles of traditional social groups. On the basis of a discussion of the images and discourse on the technical and social uses of nature, the river and its banks, we provide a discussion of the geopolitical dispute over the truth about these spaces, at a time when the mythology of Brazilian national integration is being transformed.

Keywords : São Francisco river; landscapes; contemporary Brazil.
