Abstract

RAMIREZ HURTADO, Luciano  and  GARCIA ROBLES, Marco Antonio. Jesús F. Contreras, Sculptor. Between the Homeland, Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism. Secuencia [online]. 2018, n.102, pp.159-197. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i102.1547.

From regional studies, based on the biographical method that seeks a new sociocultural assessment of the artist, this article describes and analyzes a series of hitherto unknown aspects of the Aguascalientes sculptor Jesús F. Contreras (1866-1902). Examining rarely explored documentary sources, as well as classic and recent bibliography on this character, in addition to hemerography (the written press published in Aguascalientes, Mexico City and Paris at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century) and unpublished photographic images (from the photo album of the Contreras family), the article proposes a new vision from the local level, without losing sight of the national and international context, in the fluctuation between nationalism and the prevailing cosmopolitanism of the time. Its importance lies in the fact that it opens up new historiographic and research veins because, among other things, it explains its wide network of family relationships and friendship.

Keywords : Jesús F. Contreras; sculpture; regionalism; nationalism; cosmopolitanism.
