Abstract

MARTINEZ DELGADO, Gerardo  and  ALMAZAN, Manuel. Porfirio Díaz Goes on Tour. Photographic Propaganda, Production and Circulation at the End of the Regime: Guanajuato in 1903. Secuencia [online]. 2019, n.105, e1626.  Epub July 04, 2019. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i105.1626.

In October 1903, President Porfirio Díaz visited the city of Guanajuato and inaugurated a number of monuments and public works. It was not just any event. Numerous photographers were present to cover his actions. Some were merely amateurs whereas others were technically equipped and highly trained professionals. First, this article recovers and intersects the photographic testimonials to contribute to an understanding of significant processes in the history of photography in Mexico, particularly its reproduction in the press with broad circulation, scope and professionalization. Subsequently, through an analysis in which the image takes center stage, press photographs help reveal the political promotion strategies at stake at the end of Díaz’s regime.

Keywords : illustrated journalism; professionalization of press photography; Porfirio Díaz’s tours; photographic agencies; Guanajuato.
