This article investigates the political commitment of the intellectuals in the António Sérgio’s and Celso Furtado’s books, great names of Portuguese and Brazilian social theory at the twentieth century. We study their propositions about the definition and functions of the intellectuals, considering them inside the general structure of the writers’ political ideas. Finally, we show the convergences and the differences between them and we confront their theory with their way.
