Abstract

GAUNA, Juan Pablo. Debates around “the missing”: The case of Controversia journal. Secuencia [online]. 2024, n.118, e2206.  Epub Feb 23, 2024. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i118.2206.

In this article, we join the debate on the testimonials of former detainees-disappeared persons in Argentina during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), describing the subjective twist that questioned the universalizing discourses typical of the 1960s and 1970s found in Controversia journal to examine the Argentinean reality (1979-1981), published by Argentineans during their exile in Mexico. We begin with the hypothesis that these changes in point of view were expressed through a particular approach to the problem of human rights, showing the contradictions created by the voices of those who were missing. highlighting the intractable social problems caused by the violence of state terrorism at the time and the establishment of an agenda of complex problems concerning human rights as a result of the democratic transitions occurring in the 1980s in South America.

Keywords : Controversia journal; human rights; missing persons; testimonial; exile.
