Abstract
BUSTAMANTE-OGANDO, Juan Carlos et al. Psychological evaluation of applicants accepted into Pediatrics Residency Program at Instituto Nacional de Pediatría. Acta pediatr. Méx [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.3, pp.202-211. ISSN 2395-8235.
In order to select the best candidates for pediatric residency program, it is important to consider not only academic skills but also the features of cognitive and personality profile to reassure an optimal performance. The aim of this study was to describe the psychological profile of physicians accepted for Pediatric Residency Program at Instituto Nacional de Pediatría. With a descriptive, transversal, retrospective design, data were obtained from 44 files of accepted physicians, where cognitive and personality assessment was obtained from 2 psychometric scales: DAT-5 and MMPI-2. Residents profile included logic and common sense, fast response, work under pressure and teamwork abilities. However, they frequently scored low on empathy, moral conscience, showed difficulties for hard work, frustration tolerance, and poor ego strength. Further research is needed including a cohort design, in order to determinate the ideal profile for pediatrician resident admission. The selection is based mainly in medical knowledge evaluation, but it is needed to know about psychological strengths and weakness with the aim of establishing programs focused in this area, allowing better performance during pediatric residency program.
