Abstract

MEZA-VILLALVAZO, Victor et al. Effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids on follicular population and oocyte quality in Pelibuey sheep. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.3, pp.255-261. ISSN 0186-2979.

The effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet of Pelibuey sheep, on follicle size and oocyte quality was evaluated. Thirty sheep were placed randomly in three treatments, and were fed a basal diet and 0, 3, 6% corn oil, for TA0, TA3 and TA6 respectively. Their estrus was synchronised with three injections of PGF2a at intervals of seven days. The first injection was given on the first day of the experiment (day 0). When the animals' heat was detected, the third injection was applied, accompanied by the insertion of a vaginal sponge for 12 days. The animals were slaughtered on day 29 of the experiment, the follicles were measured and classified as small (2 - 2.99 mm), medium (3 - 4.99 mm) and large (> 5 mm). The oocyte-cumulus complexes (COCs) were suctioned by puncturing from follicles ≥ 2 mm, and were classified as excellent, good, fair and poor quality. The final live weight (FLW), final body condition (FBC) and daily weight gain (DWG) showed no differences (P > 0.05). The mean of the total follicular population and large follicles was greater in TA6 (P < 0.05). The proportion of oocytes of excellent and good quality was greater (P < 0.05) in TA3 and TA6. In conclusion, the addition of polyunsaturated fatty acids to the Pelibuey sheep diet does not alter the size and number of small and medium follicles, but does so in the case of the large follicle population, improving the quality of the collected oocytes.

Keywords : Polyunsaturated fatty acids; Pelibuey sheep; oocyte quality.
