Abstract

MONTEALEGRE QUIJANO, José Leonardo  and  GARZON QUIROGA, Julián Alonso. Critical points of traffic accidents in Ibagué, Colombia. Estud. demogr. urbanos [online]. 2021, vol.36, n.2, pp.673-715.  Epub July 30, 2021. ISSN 2448-6515.  https://doi.org/10.24201/edu.v36i2.2035.

In 2018, the World Health Organization determined that traffic accidents have become a public health concern with an annual rate of 1.2 million people deaths. In Colombia, they are the second cause of death in the population after the consequences derived from chronic diseases. The city of Ibagué reflects that 6 out of 100000 inhabitants die on the roads each year. To determine this, we study the critical accident points of the city, finding that, apart from mechanical failures, recklessness and drunk drivers, as the main reasons, inappropriate decision-making and ignorance when accessing a roundabout (round point) constitute a common denominator of accidents.

Keywords : road accidents; critical points; road culture.
