Abstract

The article describes the relationships among the socio-physical environment characteristics of the neighborhood and personal abilities in late-life. The challenges that older adults face in the fulfillment of goals and desires in daily activities are identified, and so the opportunities to improve the ability to live in the neighborhood independently. Seen from a geography of aging perspective, our findings are related to environmental gerontology and include recommendations for urban inclusive design. In accordance with the notion of successful aging, the article describes situations and characteristics of the city that enhance physical, mental, and social capacities and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
In sum, this research offers an inclusive and intergenerational vision to build neighborhoods for a variety of people in real situations. It emphasizes the importance of taking advantage of family characteristics within the community to promote quality and wellbeing in late life.
