Abstract

SUAREZ-LOPEZ, Leticia  and  MENKES BANCET, Catherine. Which individual, couple-related and social environment factors favor condom use among adolescents?. Estud. demogr. urbanos [online]. 2024, vol.39, n.1, e2165.  Epub June 07, 2024. ISSN 2448-6515.  https://doi.org/10.24201/edu.v39i1.2165.

The aim of this article is to identify which individual, couple-related and social factors determine condom use among 14 to19 year old males and females. Using a representative survey applied to students in three different states and the modified ecological model, we examine the traits associated with male condom use during last sexual intercourse for each sex. Logistic regression models were used for the analysis, taking the design of complex samples into account. The main results show gender-related differences in condom use, involving not only individual aspects, but also interactions and power balances between sexual partners and social norms. The results question the traditional approach of public policies, which tend to simplify condom use as an individual choice as opposed to a socially conditioned practice.

Keywords : adolescent; condom; sexuality; gender inequality; Mexico.
