Abstract

CORTES, Fernando; BANEGAS, Israel; FERNANDEZ, Tabaré  and  MORA, Minor. Perfiles de la pobreza en Chiapas. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.63, pp.19-50. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article presents poverty estimates for the regions and municipalities of the state of Chiapas based on the 2000 census, estimates arrived at using the methodology developed by the Technical Committee for Measuring Poverty. The study results show that poverty levels are both very high and severe statewide compared to the rest of the country and that the two dimensions are closely related. This close link can also be observed on a regional and municipal level. Taking this into account, the study concludes that measures to fight poverty in Chiapas must be universal.

Keywords : poverty; unequal income distribution; regional development; methodology; social statistics.
