This article is part of an archaeology of dreams in antiquity. A dream of Saint Jerome is its starting point for examining the matrix of sexuality, playful experience and spiritual exercises among Western Christian monks between the third and fourth centuries A.D. The article makes extensive use of Michel Foucault's category "practices of the self" and Pierre Hadot's "spiritual exercises."
