Abstract

PIEDRAS, Guillermo Claudio. The Subjective Experience of the Overweight Body: An Analysis from the Point of View of Symbolic Interactionism. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2012, vol.27, n.75, pp.125-155. ISSN 2007-8358.

This text's central objective is to understand the consequences for personal identity and in the area of the interaction of meanings we usually hold today regarding the appearance of the overweight body in a society that values or has as the symbol of reference the image of the slender body in women and the athletic body in men. This empirical, qualitative exercise is based on the theoretical and methodological suppositions of symbolic interactionism and was inspired in the valuable contributions and precise details that Erving Goffman brought to his famous 1963 book Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity.

Keywords : overweight body; stigma; subjective experience; expressive control; virtual social identity; real social identity.
