Abstract

RAMIREZ PAREDES, Juan Rogelio. Rural Socio-musical Identities?. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2012, vol.27, n.75, pp.157-194. ISSN 2007-8358.

The link between a musical genre and its audience's social expressions is the basis for the concept of socio-musical identity. This category assumes that a collective formation based on musical preference exists anchored in specific local or regional conditions that take in migrant music. This article analyzes the reception of the "tribal" genre in San Luis Potosí, Mexico's municipalities of Villa de Guadalupe and Matehuala. The author is able to follow how recent music, known as "tribal music," went through both municipalities. The way it was appropriated allows him to construct a fruitful contrast in view of the category of socio-musical identity.

Keywords : socio-musical identity; socio-musical spectrum; foundational generation; musical community; musical scene.
