Abstract

ABRANTES, Pedro. Teaching and Training Systems for the Modern Individual. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2012, vol.27, n.76, pp.115-148. ISSN 2007-8358.

It is argued that schools are the fundamental driving force for producing modernity, through creating new aptitudes, attitudes, practices, and values to orient individuals. Based on a series of sociological theories, this article first discusses the process of modernization and the traits that educational systems have taken on. Later, the author seeks to prove some hypotheses about the socializing role of schools in different regions of Europe using a statistical analysis based on European Social Survey 2008 data and taking into consideration variables like educational level, social class, generation, and region.

Keywords : education; modernity; culture; individualization; attitudes; socialization.
