Abstract

ESTRELLA VEGA, Mirna Yazmín. Between Autonomy and Subordination: Meanings and Perspectives of the Migratory Experience of Central American Women in Transit through Mexico. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.93, pp.247-280. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article analyzes the migratory experience of Central American women as they go through Mexico. It covers their trajectories and perspectives on the impossibility of surviving economically in their countries of origin and also the increasingly complex situations they find themselves in when they arrive in the United States to live the “American Dream,” with gender violence as one of the main characteristics of their whole experience. In this context, migrants’ destinations have changed, making Mexico a possible place to settle as a temporary option for survival given the generalized crisis of violence in the region.

Keywords : female Central American migration; migration in transit; migratory trajectories; gender violence.
