Abstract

HERNANDEZ FLORES, José Álvaro. Migration and Symbolic Capital. Orthodox and Heretical Strategies in Peri-urban Areas of the Cholula, Puebla Region. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.94, pp.75-106. ISSN 2007-8358.

Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical approach, this article analyzes the social practices aimed at generating, accumulating, and distributing symbolic capital in three peri-urban locations with high migration in the Central Mexico region of Cholula, Puebla. The authors start off with the hypothesis that intensified migration in contexts in which symbolic capital accumulation is a central element of reproduction strategies changes the habitus of social agents. This, in turn, fosters the emergence of “heretical” or “subversive” practices that challenge the established social order and attempt to change the structure and rules operating in those contexts.

Keywords : reproduction strategies; symbolic capital; habitus; Bourdieu; cargo system.
