Abstract

The author argues that violence, no matter what its specific target, starts off from five basic premises: i) violence cannot be reduced to the individual or society; ii) violence performs social functions of differentiation and integration into the social order; iii) violence creates relational processes of (de)articulation of meaning; iv) violence is defined socially in accordance with criteria of law and morality; and v) societies survive violence through conflict.
