Abstract

CEBALLOS-SILVA, Alejandro P.  and  LOPEZ-BLANCO, Jorge. Delineation of suitable areas for alternative crops: A multicriteria-GIS evaluation approach. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.109-118. ISSN 2395-8030.

The suitable areas for the alternative crops amaranth and prickly pear were delimited in the rural development district of Toluca, state of Mexico, by means of a multicriteria-GIS evaluation approach using biophysical databases of climate, soil, relief and land use/cover. We found 1048 ha with high potential for cultivating amaranth and 4747 ha for prickly pear. These results are promising considering that the bulk of those areas are located on lands with physical degradation of soil and rain-fed agriculture.

Keywords : rain-feed crops; amaranth; nopal; productive potential.
