Abstract
BOLANOS GONZALEZ, Martín; PAZ PELLAT, Fernando; PALACIOS VELEZ, Enrique and NAVARRO, Javier. Measuring of spectral reflectances in forest species using a radio controlled helicopter. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.185-189. ISSN 2395-8030.
This work describes the development of a new platform for the measurement of spectral reflectances and plant cover in forested areas, which, because of their dimensions (height and extension), are very difficult to measure using conventional sampling techniques, in addition to the high cost. As a consequence, it was decided to test the effectiveness of using a radio controlled helicopter (RCH) that rises to heights above the forest canopy to obtain data on reflectance and plant cover without inducing a scale effect because of small sampling areas; therefore, the data obtained are representative of the forest. The use of the RCH as a measurement platform produced satisfactory results in seventeen measuring sites in the states of Mexico, Hidalgo and the Federal District; although it is necessary to implement some additional adaptations for improving the stability and safety of the RCH and measuring equipment, especially in adverse atmospheric conditions, such as strong winds and fog, that are common conditions in the forested areas of Mexico.
