Abstract

CASIANO DOMINGUEZ, Marcos et al. Spatial scaling of spectral heterogeneous media using temporal invariances. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.4, pp.315-326. ISSN 2395-8030.

The use of spectral information in satellite images with different pixel spatial resolutions (MODIS, 250 m and LANDSAT 30 m, as an example) and different revisit times is an unsolved problem in spatial scaling. Spatial scaling of spectral information can be used in the development of vegetation monitoring with daily revisit times (MODIS) through spectral information integrity. The actual theoretical developments show a scaling solution (radiative turbid media) that is not directly accessible through satellite technology (black soils). In this paper, a solution for scaling is presented to convert heterogeneous media (partial vegetation cover, not dense) to one where spectral scaling theoretical developments are applied. Theoretical and methodological development for scaling of the red band, and its extension to near infrared, are presented where this approach requires the concept of time invariance of infinite reflectances (optically dense media) for its application. The methodological proposal is discussed regarding two experiments in the literature and experiments with sorghum, bean and safflower crops in Obregon City, Sonora, Mexico. The experimental results shown that infinite reflectances time invariance concept is supported, allowing operational use of scaling methodology.

Keywords : spatial scaling; R and IRC spectral bands; heterogeneous media; time invariance; infinite reflectances.
