Abstract

The Schumpeter contribution to modern democratic theory consists in to limit the meaning of Democracy to a mere electoral competition in order to build governments. This model is named realist because dismiss the citizenship expectations and abilities to influence and control the results of democratic governance. It reduces the citizen role to the act to vote. However Schumpeter model is hegemonic in the contemporary political science, especially in the economic theory of democracy. This essay examines the logical and empirical consistency and limitations of Schumpeter theoretical model.
