Abstract

Background and Aims:
Trichophaeopsis belongs to the family Pyronemataceae (Pezizales, Ascomycota). It is characterized by tiny apothecia of less than 5 mm in diameter with dark brown setae, operculate-octosporic asci and smooth or verrucate ascospores. The species are ectomycorrhizal with temperate distribution. The present study aims to describe the genus for the first time for Mexico.
Methods:
The specimens were collected in Quercus-Pinus forest from Victoria, Tamaulipas, located in the Sierra Madre Oriental. The specimens were processed according to traditional mycological techniques and deposited in the Jose Castillo Tovar mycological herbarium of the Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Key results:
Trichophaeopsis paludosa was identified, which is characterized by apothecia up to 4 mm in diameter with dark brown setae and growing associated with Quercus rysophylla in Quercus-Pinus forest, in the state of Tamaulipas.
Conclusions:
Trichophaeopsis paludosa is a member of Pyronemataceae with tiny apothecia. Due to their size, it is difficult to locate, which has complicated its discovery. It is possible that it is widely distributed in Quercus-Pinus forest in Mexico.
