Abstract

CARRILLO, Jorge  and  GOMIS, Redi. Generaciones de maquiladoras: Un primer acercamiento a su medición. Frontera norte [online]. 2005, vol.17, n.33, pp.25-51. ISSN 2594-0260.

At the beginning of this century, the maquiladora export industry stands at a historic crossroads: A structural loss of competitive advantage limits its modernization and upgrading. A better understanding of the types of firms that operate in Mexico's northern border region could be very useful for meeting the challenge that local and national-level strategic actors face in firmly establishing existing plants and attracting new investment that would generate more and better jobs. Based on a representative survey of 298 firms in the electronics and auto parts sector in Tijuana, Mexicali, and Ciudad Juárez, this article presents the measurements for determining the diversity of maquiladora plants. The results show the existence of six types of firms based on level of technology, decisionmaking autonomy, and vertical integration which very well may indicate the spreading of the generations of maquiladoras.

Keywords : generations of firms; maquiladora export industry; electronics and auto parts; Mexico; northern border.
