Abstract

MAIER, Elizabeth. La disputa por el cuerpo de la mujer, la/s sexualidad/es y la/s familia/s en Estados Unidos y México. Frontera norte [online]. 2008, vol.20, n.40, pp.7-47. ISSN 2594-0260.

In this article I propose to initiate a revision of the contemporary cultural dispute for social significance between two societal models that have placed women's bodies, sexuality, relationships, and family in the centre of the discussion, both in the United States and Mexico. In an initial look at the issue, I propose to: identify the historical context in which these agents in dispute emerged; describe their process of consolidation as social agents in both US and Mexico; examine the logic that articulates their proposals, and the political advances that have resulted through a national-international synergy; and, finally, exemplify the dispute and the mechanics of their functioning through analysis of the recent process of legalization of abortion on July, 2007, at Mexico City, where the borders of the collective imagination of both sides were clearly defined. In the article, I analyze the differences and tensions between these two societal proposals, in their campaign to achieve the privilege of cultural interpretation.

Keywords : Feminism; religious fundamentalism; religious conservatism; free choice; abortion.
