Abstract

WISNIAK, Jaime. Émile Ovide Joseph Mathias: Thermodynamics of saturated fluids. Educ. quím [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.1, pp.55-62. ISSN 0187-893X.

Emile Ovide Joseph Mathias (1861-1942) was a multifaceted scientist who started his activities in the area of thermodynamics and then switched to magnetic phenomena and electrical phenomena in the atmosphere. He collaborated with Cailletet in the development of methods for measuring and correlating the density of liquefied gases and their saturated vapors. His name is particularly known for the so-called law of rectilinear diameters that allows an easy determination of the critical volume.

Keywords : Thermodynamics; rectilinear diameter; terrestrial magnetism; density; liquefied gases.
