Abstract

SALAS-BANUET, Guillermo; RAMIREZ-VIEYRA, José  and  NOGUEZ-AMAYA, Ma. Eugenia. The misunderstood electronegativity - Trilogy.: II. Evolution in the electronegativity quantification. Educ. quím [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.2, pp.155-161. ISSN 0187-893X.

The work of Linus Pauling has inspired a great diversity of ideas, works, and proposals in order to define a universal electronegativity (X) concept and its corresponding scales. The earlier methods for proposing atomic X scales, which exhibit novel ideas, are introduced here. In doing so, the development of each method and how it was intellectualized from the previous ones is shown: This result in different X definitions having both diverse units and different physical meaning. The differences of authors' points of view are remarked through the contrast between their own opinions.

Keywords : electronegativity; electroaffinity; history; scales; definition.
