Abstract

SALAS BANUET, Guillermo; RAMIREZ VIEYRA, José  and  NOGUEZ AMAYA, Ma. Eugenia. Understanding the electronegativity-Trilogy: III. The misunderstood electronegativity. Educ. quím [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.3, pp.224-231. ISSN 0187-893X.

There are dozens of electronegativity (X) scales published. Excluding the ones proposing simple correlations between properties, they are summarized here. The different intents to evaluate and regulate the X scales are displayed. A balance was made, allowing us to appreciate: the great diversity of ideas generated over the years; the scales tendency is not so different when comparing with Pauling's one; and no one is 100% successfully in a given application. This permits the authors to suggest that X is not a property, but a behavior. To find a universal X scale at this moment seems difficult.

Keywords : electronegativity; scales; properties; applications; structure.
