Abstract

In this paper, commitments of chemistry professionals and of teachers should assume in the celebration of International Year of Chemistry in relation to citizenship from the global context of the technological development of Chemistry are discussed. It is recognized that Chemistry has contributed significantly to improving life quality and economic development. On the other hand, it is highlighted that the model of global technological development has increased the concentration of income and social inequality, causing serious environmental accidents as well. Educational principles for citizenship are discussed, stressing the development of decision making capacity and the development of ethical values; likewise the conception of science-technology-society approach in the critical perspective based on Paulo Freire ideas. In conclusion, it is recommended to insert socioscientific discussions into Chemistry courses and in Chemistry teaching in schools with purpose to reflect on the role of Chemistry in society, with critical awareness of its benefits, risks and social implications.
