Abstract

GHINI, Alberto et al. Carbon Chemistry Approach in a Massive Introductory General Chemistry Course. Educ. quím [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.3, pp.370-374. ISSN 0187-893X.

This work deals with the methodology and results obtained when applying a sequence of contents different from the one usually taught in General Chemistry introductory courses at graduate level. The most significant change consists in the incorporation of carbon compounds in the unit devoted to chemical bonding. This approach was developed in order to allow students both to perceive the uniqueness of the discipline and engage in a variety of issues than those included in the official syllabus, particularly the ones important to Biology and Chemistry. The relevance of this approach was looked into by means of surveys, teaching of special topics and further tracking of students' learning improvements in subsequent courses where these contents have fundamental importance.

Keywords : introductory chemistry course; general chemistry; carbon chemistry; syllabus.
