This paper presents a characterization of the teaching approach followed by Chemistry teachers in the municipality of Soacha. In order to identify the teaching approach followed by the teachers study group, the Aproaches to Teaching Inventory (ATI), was applied. The study involved also determination of socio-demographic variables such as gender, study time, type of institution, teacher's classification and academic qualifications.

Analysis and interpretation of the results led to de following conclusions: a high presence of the students centred conceptual change approach stressed in eleventh grade female teachers; high meaningful correlations between the teaching approach and socio-demographic variables like commune and age. A remarkable high correlation between teaching approach, academic formation and the classification of chemistry teachers is also present. However, teaching approach and study time correlation is not present in this study.

Keywords : Teaching approach; Aproaches to Teaching Inventory; students centred conceptual change approach; teacher centred transmission of information approach; socio-demographic variables.
