Abstract

FUENTE MUNOZ, César Espino de la  and  ARIAS ALVAREZ, Clorinda. Mitochondria in the brain and their alterations in Alzheimer’s disease. Educ. quím [online]. 2022, vol.33, n.2, pp.18-36.  Epub Nov 28, 2022. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2022.2.80086.

The mitochondrial network is characterized by complex events of fusion, fission, transport, and degradation that are highly regulated processes. In the brain, the mitochondrial dynamics is essential for maintaining neuronal connectivity, and alterations in their function and integrity can contribute to synaptic damage in age-related diseases. In this review, we present an overview of the relevance of mitochondria in the nervous system and emphasize the evidence that exists about mitochondria dysfunction in patients and models of Alzheimer’s disease.

Keywords : Alzheimer’s disease; mitochondria; mitochondrial dysfunction; neurodegeneration.
