Abstract

FLOCK, Wigbert. Poverty and self-organization in Santiago de Chile: An ethnographic research in the José María Caro suburb. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2005, vol.67, n.1, pp.01-30. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article provides a brief summary of an empirical study undertaken as part of a doctoral dissertation written at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Münster, Germany (1999-2002). The research -which emphasizes qualitative aspects- sought to determine the potential for self-organization in the densely populated area of José María Caro in Santiago de Chile. The author carried out an ethnographic analysis of the prevailing social conditions there, while attempting to keep the interpretations of local actors in the foreground at all times.

Keywords : Ethnography; self-organization; Chile; poverty; drugs; social capital.
