Abstract

BENSUSAN, Graciela. The Mexican Electric Workers Union and the Labour Restructuring of the National Agency in Charge of Providing Light Services. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2005, vol.67, n.3, pp.543-591. ISSN 2594-0651.

This present article approaches the opportunities and restrictions arising from the peculiar nature of the "Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas" (SME) in the context of the modernization of "Luz y Fuerza del Centro" (LFC), ten years after it was created. The paper analyzes the characteristics of this trade union, the dynamic of negotiations linked to its restructuring, what its members think about the change in labour relations and the proposals geared to ensuring its viability. The article argues that the SME should be seen as part of the problem facing LFC, but likewise as part of the solution, availing of the status of "citizens" exhibited by its members in building a true model of industrial democracy within the electricity sector.

Keywords : electricity sector; modernization; labour relations; negotiation; trade unions; collective contracts.
