Abstract

GALINDO, Luis Miguel  and  CATALAN, Horacio. Criminal Activities in Mexico's Federal District. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2007, vol.69, n.3, pp.457-484. ISSN 2594-0651.

The main objective of this article is to identify the most important economic causes that affect the criminality levels in the Distrito Federal. The results indicate that criminal activity is a complex phenomenon with multiple dimensions. In general criminal activities depend, negatively, on the probability of imprisonment and the severity of punishment and, in this context, it also depends positively on the unemployment rate and inversely on commercial activity. Criminal activities can be reduced by better police work and a more efficient justice administration in the context of economic growth and unemployment reduction.

Keywords : Criminality; impunity; causes; justice administration.
