Abstract

EASTWOOD, Jonathan. Contextualizing Chavez: Contemporary Venezuelan Nationalism in Historical Perspective. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2007, vol.69, n.4, pp.605-639. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article seeks to contextualize the successful rhetorical strategies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías. It argues, against the notion that Chávez constitutes a distinct break with the Venezuelan past, that in at least this aspect of political legitimation Chávez is best understood in relation to the sort of collectivistic and civic nationalism that has dominated Venezuelan political discourse since the 19th century.

Keywords : Hugo Chávez; nationalism; Venezuela-history; Venezuela-politics.
