Abstract

GARCIA GUZMAN, Brígida. Mexican Urban Labor Markets in the Early 21st Century. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2009, vol.71, n.1, pp.5-46. ISSN 2594-0651.

This study analyzes the labor situation in 32 of the most important Mexican cities based on the 2006 National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE). It highlights the existing precariousness in terms of the lack of labor contracts and social protection, as well as unemployment, the widespread presence of self-employed workers and micro-businesses, low salaries, part-time jobs and unionizing levels. Based on these factors, the author constructs an index of the labor situation for the residents of the cases studied, which attempts to arrange the information referred to these precarious labor markets in a hierarchical order.

Keywords : labor markets; job precariousness; Mexican cities; employment surveys.
