Abstract

This article investigates the emergence of a new approach for rural development studies in Latin America in the mid-1990s. It explores the various interpretations and contradictions of this approach as well as the resulting debates. The analysis focuses on the four main changes in rural economy and society normally highlighted by the "new ruralists". It also makes a distinction between the reformist, community and territorial approaches of the new rurality.
