Abstract

AVILA GARCIA, Patricia  and  LUNA SANCHEZ, Eduardo. From the environmentalism of the rich to the environmentalism of the poor. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2013, vol.75, n.1, pp.63-89. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article analyzes the recent wave of privatization on the west coast of Mexico, which promotes investments in real-estate and tourism that violate agricultural rights, create social conflicts and destroy ecosystems. It also documents the disputes over the control of strategic resources on the coast of Jalisco state. These disputes are evident in the social movements that defend social and common property. All of this takes place within a game of alliances and power relationships between the private sector and the State, with the aim of implementing private projects on coastal land regardless of their social and environmental cost.

Keywords : social disputes; privatization; common property; environmentalism of the poor; private-sector elites.
