Abstract

MARTINEZ VELASCO, Germán. Chiapas: social change, migration and life course. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2014, vol.76, n.3, pp.347-382. ISSN 2594-0651.

Given the recent increase in migration from Chiapas to the U.S., this paper analyzes the factors that prevented Chiapas residents from being incorporated into the migration flows of the early 20th century. To this end, it analyzes Chiapas' social structure and historical dialectic; this analysis is enhanced by the life course approach, which has the advantage of revealing the intersection of the time of the individual and the time of social change. From this perspective, understanding the dynamics of Chiapas migration goes beyond a purely economic approach.

Keywords : migration; socialization; options structure; individual trajectories; social time.
