Abstract

BENITO SANCHEZ, Ana Belén. Caciques and factions in Dominican Republic. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2014, vol.76, n.4, pp.529-556. ISSN 2594-0651.

The aim of this article is to describe and classify the major internal disagreements in Dominican political parties from the transition to the present, on the basis of the typology of Françoise Boucek, and to highlight the connection with clientelist politics. Factionalism encourages personal as opposed to party loyalty, hinders cooperation in the aggregation of interests and creates a system of particularized rewards within a party similar to the patron-client relationship characterizing political representation in the country.

Keywords : political parties; factions; clientelism; Dominican Republic.
