Abstract

LALLEMENT, Michel. Logic of class and social distinction. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2019, vol.81, n.2, pp.337-360. ISSN 2594-0651.

Two kinds of conditions, both external and internal, impact the way sociological theories are constructed. The work of Edmond Goblot (1858-1935) can be interpreted from this perspective. This French philosopher is known for his book La barrière et le niveau (1925), which has become a standard reference for the sociology of social classes. This theory was based on the bourgeois milieu in which Goblot lived, but it is also internally shaped by a logic of relations, enabling one to read the book as an exercise in logic.

Keywords : sociological theory; logic; social class; bourgeoisie; Goblot.
