Abstract

MARTINEZ ESPINOSA, Alejandro. Social meanings and feeding of schoolchildren in Mexico City. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2020, vol.82, n.3, pp.529-556.  Epub Sep 25, 2020. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2020.3.58501.

In Mexico, high levels of excess weight are reported since childhood. This problem has been managed by means of food supply regulations, without understanding the foundations of food consumption. In this article, the objective is to explore the socially shared meanings attributed to food in house-holds with school-age girls and boys. To do that, 14 interviews with mothers of school- children were analyzed qualitatively. The narratives were located in the opposition indulge-care, thereby identifying the emotional and social satisfaction derived from food composition. By considering meanings, it would be possible to identify the most appropriate way to promote healthier diets.

Keywords : meanings; feeding; households; stratification; practices; school-age.
